“Is There More To Art Than Skill, Imagination And Inspiration?”

By Michael Dale

As an artist, it is important to use your own imagination, rather than to make a simple copy of what you see in front of you. Creating a good likeness can be important but does that result in good art?

Good drawing and painting requires more... It requires skill, vision and imagination to transform it into Art.

When you look at a snapshot photograph... it can look great. However, when you compare it with a studio portrait photograph you can see more. It has taken time, skill and expertise to carefully pose the subject and get the lighting conditions perfect... This brings it closer to Art.

An artist can add time and knowledge to a picture, along with atmosphere and feeling.

When you think about the tools and equipment of art they can have no connection with an object being drawn. Most drawing and painting materials are little more than earth elements bound in gum. They have a completely different feel to any living organism.

Yet an artist can bring a person or object to life with no more than the flick of a brush... "How do they do it?"

The first requirement is skill and knowledge...

An artist knows their art equipment. They know about their art materials. And, from the many hours of practice, they are happy using their equipment and art materials….

Secondly… As an artist looks at the world around them they ask questions, a few of which are…

  • What is it?
  • Why is it where it is?
  • What does it do?
  • Who made it?
  • What did they make it from?

Thirdly… From a combination of their skills and knowledge of how the world about them works, along with their ideas and inspiration… they begin to work on their art creation.

By using what appear to be splodges of paint and random marks, an artist can build a picture of what they see, think and feel. They add to their artwork gradually and create new realities. And, when things go wrong, or they want to change their minds, they can remove what doesn't work, by scraping away or erasing... opening a fresh window on what is important

Know that a great work of art is much more than a copy, as you stand in front of it looking at it in wonder and admiration.

And, when you create your own artwork. Don't just copy... Try to put every ounce of skill and knowledge into it, along with your thoughts and feelings. It could be your own masterpiece.
