“Should Art Be Simple Or Complicated?” By Michael Dale When you start learning to draw your aim will be to draw like an expert… Is this a good way to begin? At the start of your first painting, you are likely to want to paint complicated pictures… How can this guarantee an Art Masterpiece? As a beginner, you will want to create great art quickly. Most likely you will want to create real life copies of your favorite subjects. If you think this is likely within a few weeks, you are in for disappointment… you will be unsuccessful. But here is no need for dissatisfaction if you take guidance from the best modern artists of all time. Take a good look at Picasso. Throughout his artistic life he was experimenting... trying to simplify what he wanted to draw and paint. It didn't prevent him being a world leader of Abstract Art. Also, try looking out for Terry Frost to see how simple his artwork is. The Impressionists did their best to illustrate the fundametals of their world. And, later, Vincent Van Gogh began working with broad brushstrokes of color to represent his view of life and his surroundings. All great artists learned the basics of painting and drawing. If that is the case for them, you would surely take their lead. To get the best from your art, it makes sense to learn using the same basic painting and drawing methods of the great artists. The fact that a beginner doesn't have that fundamental knowledge... it is the only thing preventing you from producing good art fast. A realistic painting can only grow from skilled paint application. This isn’t hard to do when you know the techniques required. You need drawing practice to achieve the status of good draughtsmanship. It does take time to become a good artist. There is no better way other than to start drawing lines that are as straight as you can. After that you will draw a series of dashes, followed by freehand curves. Don't even think about it... just do it. As you get comfortable and begin to feel more relaxed, draw some circular shapes... and then start to fill them with shading that is as even-toned as you can manage. The best route to your artistic success will be for you to relax with your pencils, pens and brushes... and have some fun. By concentrating upon your drawing skills you will become an expert. And, regarding color… be an expert at using just one color for now....
